Update: 16:37, Feb 01, 2016
A Dhaka court on Monday ordered a judicial inquiry into the allegation of harassment of a female student of a private university by a police sub-inspector, Ratan Kumar.
Justice Saleh Uddin Ahmed of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 passed the order after the victim filed a case with the court.
The authorities concerned have, in the meantime, suspended the police sub-inspector, Ratan Kumar, on charge of harassing the female university student.
The police officer was closed shortly after the allegation was levelled against him earlier on Sunday.
Tejgaon division’s deputy commissioner of police Biplab Kumar has confirmed it to Prothom Alo.
Ratan Kumar, however, denied the allegation and claimed that the female student is the wife of leader of Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal, the youth wing of opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and he was enquiring her about the Juba Dal leader.
Allegation has it that the female student of a private university fell victim of police harassment in front of Shia Mosque in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, on Sunday.
“The SI was closed on Sunday night shortly after the allegation was raised. After primary investigation, the authorities have decided to suspend him.
Full investigation into the allegation will be carried out later and necessary actions will be taken,” said Biplob Kumar.
Biplob said an additional DC of police has conducted the primary investigation into the allegation against the SI.
“SI Ratan spoke to the female student for about 10 minutes after intercepting her rickshaw around 3:00pm Sunday at Shia Mosque crossing in Mohammadpur,” the investigator was quoted to have said.
According to the additional DC, people found an exchange of hot talks between the SI and the female student at that time, but none could confirm about the topic of the talks.
Biplob Kumar said there was no warrant against the female student and furthermore the police need their women members to search a woman.
“Considering all these things, the authorities have deicided to suspend SI Ratan.”
Torture of a Bangladesh Bank official, Golam Rabby, by Mohammadpur police station sub inspector Masud Shikder and assault on a city corporation inspector, Bikash Chandra Das, by Jatrabari police triggered a huge criticism of police excesses.
According to the victim, three members of police led by SI Ratan intercepted the rickshaw of the victim on her way from the university.
Police members forcibly got her down from the rickshaw even without paying the rickshaw fare.
The female student of a private university alleged the police were trying to brand her as a Yaba peddler and searched her purse and jacket in the name of “so-called recovery of Yaba.”
The victim alleged SI Ratan hurled abusive words at her at that time.
